Overview

Transurethral Resection of Prostate is a minimally invasive procedure. A specialized cystoscope is used to remove a portion of the prostate in order to enlarge the urinary pathway. It is usually performed for those patients who have difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate and failed and/or are unable to tolerate prostate medication.

How to prepare for the procedure

Transurethral Resection of Prostate is performed under general anesthesia. You can expect to start fasting the night prior to your procedure. The pre-operative testing may be necessary which may include; blood work, chest x-ray, EKG, discontinuation of medications, and clearance for other medical reasons. The procedure will be done at the hospital and usually requires an overnight stay. Patient will be discharged home with a catheter that will remain in for several days.
