Nephrectomy

Overview

A nephrectomy is a procedure to remove the kidney and surrounding structures. The procedure is performed for those patients with abnormal kidney mass, non-functioning kidney, and kidney infection/trauma. The procedure involves a minimally invasive technique via small incisions using laparoscopic instruments.

How to prepare for the procedure

A nephrectomy is performed under general anesthesia. When preparing to have a procedure performed under anesthesia you can expect to start fasting the night prior to your procedure. Please consult with your surgeon to discuss the pre-operative testing which may include; blood work, chest x-ray, EKG, discontinuation of medications, and clearance for other medical reasons. The procedure will be done at the hospital. Patient will be admitted to the hospital for a few days and discharged home with a catheter in for several days.
