Spermatocele

What is a spermatocele/epididymal cyst?

A spermatocele/epididymal cyst is a fluid filled dilation of the epididymis which is where the sperm are stored and matured. These are typically identified on a testicular self exam and brought to the physicians attention as a lump on the testicle. They are a benign condition which can usually just be observed. The exact etiology is unknown, but it arises from a blocked spermatic duct.

Evaluation

The evaluation will involve a complete physical exam confirming the lump on the epididymis. An ultrasound is typically performed to confirm that there is nothing more to be concerned about.

Treatment

This condition is typically observed unless it is causing discomfort or growing too large. If treatment were necessary it would be a surgical excision of the cyst.
