Simple Prostatectomy

Overview

A simple prostatectomy is for those patients who have an enlarged prostate with related urinary symptoms. The procedure entails the removal of the prostate via an abdominal incision. Prostatectomy will lead to a wider urethra which will result in improvement of urine flow.

How to prepare for the procedure

A prostatectomy is performed under general anesthesia. When preparing to have a procedure performed under anesthesia you can expect to start fasting the night prior to your procedure. Please consult with your surgeon to discuss the pre-operative testing which may include; blood work, chest x-ray, EKG, discontinuation of medications, and clearance for other medical reasons. The procedure will be done at the hospital and the patient will be admitted to the hospital for a few days and discharged home with a catheter in for several days.
