Overview
Penile prosthesis insertion is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. It is for those patients who have failed or unable to tolerate oral and/or injectable medication. There are two types of penile prosthesis; semi-rigid and inflatable. Semi-rigid prosthesis is a malleable rod. This rod can be manipulated manually to allow the penis to point upward when the patient desires an erection. Inflatable prosthesis is a ‘balloon’ type device that allows the patient to manually pump fluid in and out of the erection chambers when desired.
How to prepare for the procedure
Penile prosthesis is performed under general anesthesia. When preparing to have a procedure performed under anesthesia you can expect to start fasting the night prior to your procedure. Please consult with your surgeon to discuss the pre-operative testing which may include; blood work, chest x-ray, EKG, discontinuation of medications, and clearance for other medical reasons. The procedure will be done at the hospital or outpatient surgery center.
