Overview

A cystoscopy is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure. This procedure is performed by inserting a thin lighted instrument called a cystoscope into the urethra. A cystoscope allows the doctor to visualize and possibly treat any abnormalities identified within the urethra and bladder.

How to prepare for the procedure

A cystoscopy is usually performed under local anesthesia, but in some cases sedation is required. When preparing to have a procedure performed under anesthesia you can expect to start fasting the night prior to your procedure. Please consult with your surgeon to discuss the pre-operative testing which may include; blood work, a chest x-ray, an EKG, the discontinuation of medications, and clearance for other medical reasons. The procedure will be done at the office or the outpatient surgery center.
